How to use IGTV in 2019.
I'm catching up on a few e-mails and tasks this morning and wanted to share something I've noticed that is very encouraging with one of Instagram’s newest features - IGTV.
Yesterday I shared an IGTV episode talking about engagement on instagram. My video is just shy of 7 minutes - I felt like I could have talked for an hour but I tried to boil down my points into a few bite sized pieces. I recorded it straight from my phone in about 2-3 takes that I spliced together with the Clips app.
Here’s something exciting that I noticed : The video has about 185 views compared to my other IGTV videos which have about 50-80 views.
That is nearly 3x the amount of views.
I don’t think there is anything magical happening here, so I want to spill the beans on why IGTV exposure is going further in 2019 than when it originally was released roughly a year ago in 2018.
The secret to why igtv video exposure is increasing?
Instagram is pushing IGTV episodes into feeds and explore now. Previously, you needed to go into the IGTV channel associated with one’s account. In a few words, Instagram is favoring this long-form video content. It makes sense : Facebook and Instagram don’t want you to leave their apps. Have you ever wondered why there is one link in your profile? Why only accounts with 10k + have the swipe up feature? It’s all in an effort to stay on their app.
When IGTV came out, I hopped on board right away! I was putting out episodes once or twice a week to test it out and see how it worked. I recall placing a few polls on my stories and having my followers tell me they didn’t really “get” IGTV. No one was really stoked about it. Except marketers!
I’m writing this blog post to encourage you to hop on to IGTV! There is a lot of potential for connecting with your followers, increasing value by speaking directly to your target market, and building content that reaches multiple followers on multiple platforms.
Here’s the skinny :
IGTV is an app for watching long form videos on Insta. IGTV challenges channels like YouTube and Vimeo, offering a place for people to watch video in a modern, mobile format.
You can download the IGTV app or you can watch from the Instagram app you’re in currently. If you want to upload videos, you’ll want to download the IGTV app, which is found separately in your App Store.
Videos are full screen and vertical – so you can upload straight from your phone or on the internet. I reccomend recording in one take, as much as possible.
You can upload videos that reach up to 10 minutes of video or an hour for larger accounts.
Pros : it’s easier to record on your phone, and you don’t have to hire a video crew to make quick high quality videos.
How can you add value to your followers by using IGTV?
Can you share a tutorial? Can you tell a story? Can you create event highlights? Can you record your morning routine? Can you talk about why you love coffee?
I bet there are a dozen ideas that you can jot down once you get into the zone of creating content that relates to your and your brand.
Why not try IGTV out?
If you’re using Instagram stories, you can for sure use IGTV. Just a friendly push :) Let’s talk about a few things to keep in mind while you’re creating your video!
Stay short + sweet. You’re allowed 10 minutes of video to upload. Introduce your topic, start sharing the information right away, and make it informational.
It does not have to be perfect. If you mess up a few words or feel awkward to begin with - that’s totally okay! You’ll get better with every single video.
Add music, graphics that correlate with your brand, or use fun features like Hyperlapse to keep things interesting. There really are no rules, you can get creative!

Minimum frame rate of 30 FPS (frames per second) and minimum resolution of 720 pixels
Maximum file size for videos that are 10 minutes or less is 650MB
Maximum file size for videos up to 60 minutes is 3.6GB.
Cover photo size: 420px by 654px (or 1:1.55 ratio)
